Overview

In peptide research the most common use is aliquoting: once a lyophilized vial has been reconstituted, dividing the stock into several smaller vials means each aliquot is punctured fewer times, reduces the risk of contaminating the whole batch, and allows portions to be refrigerated or frozen separately. Empty vials are also used to prepare working dilutions at lower concentration, to combine components for a blend study, or simply to hold a measured volume of bacteriostatic water for a single experiment.

Research Overview

Why laboratories aliquot

A reconstituted peptide vial is only as clean as its last needle entry. Every puncture introduces a small risk of contamination and, for peptides that are sensitive to temperature cycling, every trip out of the refrigerator or freezer contributes to degradation. Splitting a stock solution into aliquots in sterile empty vials limits both effects: each aliquot is entered only a few times, and unused aliquots stay sealed and cold until needed. Aliquoting is also the standard way to store frozen portions of a peptide that would otherwise be lost if a single vial were repeatedly thawed.

Vial construction

  • Glass body: clear borosilicate glass is chemically inert toward aqueous peptide solutions and allows contents to be inspected for clarity, color and particulates.
  • Stopper: a resealing rubber stopper accepts fine-gauge needles many times without leaking, and can be swabbed with alcohol before each entry.
  • Flip-off cap: the crimped aluminum cap keeps the stopper sterile until first use; the plastic center is removed once and the aluminum ring stays in place.

Filling and labeling

Choosing a size

The 3 mL vial is the workhorse for aliquots of a few hundred microliters to 2 mL and matches the footprint of most peptide vials in the catalog. The 10 mL vial suits dilution series, larger working solutions or holding a portion of bacteriostatic water for a single experiment. Both are compatible with standard vial racks and freezer boxes.

Handling & Storage

Store unused vials in their sealed tray at room temperature, dry and away from dust; do not remove the flip-off cap until the vial is about to be filled. Swab the exposed stopper with a 70% isopropyl alcohol prep pad and let it dry before each needle entry. Fill through the stopper with a fresh sterile syringe, dispensing slowly and venting if necessary, and never overfill — leave headspace, especially for aliquots destined for the freezer. Label immediately and store filled vials upright at 2–8 °C, or at −20 °C for longer-term frozen aliquots, protected from light. Dispose of used needles in a sharps container.

Sterile Empty Vials FAQ

What are sterile empty vials used for in peptide research?
Mainly for aliquoting: dividing a freshly reconstituted peptide vial into smaller sealed portions so each is punctured less often and can be refrigerated or frozen separately. They are also used to prepare working dilutions, to combine components for blend studies, and to hold measured volumes of diluent for a single experiment.
Which size should I choose?
The 3 mL vial handles aliquots up to roughly 2 mL and matches the size of most peptide vials in our catalog. The 10 mL vial is for larger working solutions, dilution series or holding a portion of bacteriostatic water. Both come ten to a pack.
Can the vials be frozen?
Yes. Borosilicate glass and the rubber stopper tolerate −20 °C storage. Leave adequate headspace because aqueous solutions expand when they freeze, and let vials warm to room temperature before entering the stopper so condensation does not enter the needle track.
Are the vials sterile and documented?
The vials are sterilized and sealed before shipment and remain sterile inside until the flip-off cap is removed. Lot information is on the packaging and available on request. As empty containers, HPLC purity does not apply; they contain no peptide or diluent.
