Bromantane

Origin and classification

Bromantane emerged from Russian research on adaptogenic and actoprotective agents, a category defined less by a shared mechanism than by a shared experimental endpoint: maintenance of work capacity in animals exposed to heat, hypoxia or prolonged exertion. Its adamantane core is the same rigid tricyclic cage found in amantadine and memantine, though the pharmacology reported for bromantane differs substantially from either.

Evidence limits and status

• Human data come from small, mostly older studies not indexed to modern reporting standards.
• Bromantane is not approved by the FDA and is not a dietary supplement ingredient.

Keep the bottle closed, dry and at room temperature with the desiccant left in place, away from direct light and heat. Bromantane is essentially water-insoluble, so aqueous buffers are not a practical vehicle: for cell or tissue work, weigh capsule contents on an analytical balance and prepare a concentrated stock in DMSO or ethanol, then dilute into medium so the final solvent concentration stays within the tolerance of the assay system. Verify that no precipitate forms on dilution before use. Handle as a laboratory chemical with gloves and eye protection, weigh in a ventilated enclosure, record the lot number at the start of a study, and dispose of unused material through your institution's chemical waste stream.
