Insulin-Like Peptide 3 (INSL3) — frequently asked

What is INSL3?
Insulin-like peptide 3 is a member of the insulin/relaxin superfamily, also called relaxin-like factor in older literature. It is processed from a single-chain precursor into a disulfide-linked two-chain structure comprising separate A and B chains.
Which receptor does INSL3 act on?
It is generally described as signalling through the G protein-coupled receptor RXFP2, previously designated LGR8 or GREAT. Activation is commonly reported to raise intracellular cyclic AMP in cells expressing the receptor.
Why is INSL3 researched?
It is studied as a major Leydig cell secretory product, with the most frequently cited experimental role concerning gubernaculum development and testicular descent in rodent models. It is also used as an index of Leydig cell functional capacity.
