What are endorphins?
Endorphins are opioid peptides cleaved from proopiomelanocortin. Beta-endorphin, the 31-residue form, is the most studied; alpha- and gamma-endorphin are shorter. They share the Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe opioid motif and act mainly at mu-opioid receptors in experimental systems.
Why is beta-endorphin studied?
It links the opioid system to the stress axis, since it is co-produced with ACTH from POMC. Investigators examine it in pain and reward models, in pituitary and hypothalamic biology, and as an analyte reflecting POMC processing in tissue and plasma samples.
Do endorphin sequences differ between species?
Yes. Human, rat, porcine, bovine, ovine and camel beta-endorphins differ at several positions, which affects antibody recognition and immunoassay performance. Selecting the peptide standard and antibody that match the species under study is important for reliable quantification.
