Research Overview
Why a film format is studied at all
Thin-film carriers are a pharmaceutical-technology research area in their own right. A polymer sheet loaded with active material dissolves on contact with an aqueous phase, which removes the weighing, solvent-addition, mixing and filtration steps that a lyophilized vial requires. For a laboratory the practical consequence is fewer sources of between-session variance and no cold chain for the sealed pack. Film disintegration rate, load uniformity and matrix stability are the endpoints that dissolving-strip research actually measures.
The Selank component
Selank is the Pro-Gly-Pro-stabilised analogue of tuftsin, the tetrapeptide released from the IgG heavy chain. Rodent studies have reported anxiolytic-type behaviour in elevated plus maze and open field paradigms without the sedation or motor impairment characteristic of benzodiazepine comparators. Mechanisms under investigation include GABA-A receptor subunit expression, inhibition of enkephalin-degrading enzymes and altered expression of inflammatory and stress-related genes.
The Semax component
- Reported increases in BDNF and NGF expression in rodent hippocampus and cortex.
- Changes in TrkB receptor signalling associated with synaptic plasticity endpoints.
- Shifts in dopaminergic and serotonergic turnover in frontal and striatal tissue.
- Attention, learning-acquisition and memory-retention behavioural tasks.
