Lyophilized means freeze-dried. The peptide solution is frozen, then water is removed by sublimation under vacuum rather than by heating, leaving a dry cake or powder in the vial. Almost every injectable-format research peptide ships this way because peptide bonds hydrolyse and side chains oxidise far faster in solution than in a dry solid.

What the cake tells you

Appearance carries information. A firm, uniform white cake that fills the expected volume suggests the freeze-drying step held below the collapse temperature. A shrunken, glassy or melted-looking puck indicates collapse — usually from a warm shelf or a broken vacuum — and a lot that arrives that way should be queried against its certificate of analysis. Small amounts of loose powder or a cake that has shifted in transit are cosmetic and normal.

Why it matters

Lyophilized material is the reference state for storage and handling. Sealed dry vials tolerate refrigeration or freezing for long periods and survive short ambient excursions during shipping; once reconstituted, the clock runs much faster. Bulking agents such as mannitol are sometimes included as excipients to build a visible cake at low peptide mass, which is why a 2 mg vial can look fuller than expected.
