Cold chain describes an unbroken sequence of temperature-controlled handling from manufacture through transit to end storage, with the temperature documented at each transfer. For biologics such as vaccines it is a strict requirement; for research peptides it is better understood as a spectrum, because the material’s tolerance depends heavily on what state it is in.

Why cold chain matters in peptide research

The decisive variable is water. A lyophilised peptide sealed under vacuum has little free water available for hydrolysis, so published stability work generally reports dry powder surviving days to weeks at ambient temperature with negligible measurable loss. That is why vials ship with a cold pack that has usually thawed on arrival without indicating a problem — the pack buys margin against extremes, not a guarantee of continuous refrigeration. A reconstituted solution is a different case entirely: it should return to refrigeration promptly and tolerates ambient excursions poorly.

What genuinely warrants concern is prolonged heat, direct sunlight through packaging, and repeated warm-cool transitions that can drive moisture onto a cake.
