Cosmetic peptides are short synthetic peptides formulated for topical use. The field is conventionally divided into four functional classes. Signal peptides — the largest group — are fragments that mimic matrix breakdown products and are reported to upregulate collagen and extracellular matrix synthesis in fibroblast culture; Matrixyl (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4) and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 are the reference examples, and they overlap with the matrikine concept. Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides such as Argireline and SNAP-8 are SNAP-25 fragments studied as competitive interferers with SNARE complex assembly. Carrier peptides deliver trace metals, principally GHK-Cu. Enzyme-inhibitor peptides target MMPs or tyrosinase.
How to read the claims
Two caveats travel with the whole category. First, most published support is fibroblast or explant work; controlled human split-face studies are fewer and usually manufacturer-run. Second, penetration is the limiting variable — hydrophilic peptides cross intact stratum corneum poorly, which is why palmitoylation appears so often in INCI names. An INCI designation such as "palmitoyl pentapeptide-4" is a naming convention, not evidence.
