What is secretin?
Secretin is a 27-amino-acid amidated hormone produced by S cells in the duodenum. It belongs to the secretin-glucagon-VIP peptide superfamily and signals through a class B G protein-coupled receptor that raises intracellular cyclic AMP.
Why are there species-specific secretins?
The mature sequence varies between mammals and diverges further in birds, so porcine, canine, rat, mouse, human and chicken peptides are listed separately. Using the sequence matching the experimental model avoids potency differences and antibody cross-reactivity problems.
How is secretin used in research?
It serves as a reference agonist in receptor binding and cyclic AMP assays, as a stimulus in isolated pancreatic and biliary preparations, and as a standard or immunogen in immunoassays that quantify the peptide in plasma and tissue extracts.
