What is phoenixin?
Phoenixin is a C-terminally amidated peptide derived from the protein encoded by C4orf52, also known as SMIM20. It occurs in several lengths, most commonly phoenixin-14 and phoenixin-20, and is highly conserved across mammalian species.
Which receptor does phoenixin act through?
GPR173 has been proposed as a candidate receptor in several published reports, but the assignment remains debated and has not been universally confirmed. Researchers generally describe phoenixin responses without treating the receptor question as fully resolved.
Why are different phoenixin lengths available?
Phoenixin-5, -8, -14, -15 and -20 share the same C-terminal region and differ in N-terminal extension. Comparing them lets researchers test how much of the sequence is required for a response and helps define the epitope an antibody actually recognises.
