Vesicular Monoamine Transporter (VMAT) — frequently asked

What is the difference between VMAT1 and VMAT2?
Both belong to the SLC18 family and package monoamines into vesicles. VMAT1 is associated mainly with neuroendocrine cells such as adrenal chromaffin cells, whereas VMAT2 predominates in monoaminergic neurons of the central nervous system.
Why is VMAT2 used as a neuronal marker?
Its expression is largely confined to monoaminergic neurons, so immunostaining provides a practical way to identify dopaminergic, noradrenergic, serotonergic and histaminergic populations in tissue sections and in cultured neuronal preparations.
Why are peptide antigens supplied rather than protein?
VMATs are multi-pass membrane proteins that are difficult to produce in functional soluble form. Synthetic peptides from defined regions serve instead as immunogens, as blocking controls during antibody validation, and as mass-spectrometry reference standards.
