Virokinin — frequently asked

What is virokinin?
Virokinin is a tachykinin-related peptide reported to be released by proteolytic processing of the respiratory syncytial virus fusion glycoprotein. Its carboxy-terminal region resembles the conserved motif shared by substance P and other mammalian tachykinins.
Does virokinin act on tachykinin receptors?
Reported studies have examined activity at mammalian tachykinin receptors, most often comparing it with substance P at NK1. The literature is small and findings are not extensively replicated, so its pharmacology should be treated as provisional.
How is virokinin used in research?
It serves as a comparator peptide in tachykinin receptor binding and functional assays, in isolated airway and smooth muscle preparations, and in work on how viral glycoprotein processing can generate host-like signalling peptides.
