Vasostatin (Chromogranin A Fragments) — frequently asked

What is vasostatin?
Vasostatin refers to N-terminal fragments of chromogranin A released by proteolytic processing in neuroendocrine secretory granules. Vasostatin I corresponds to the first 76 residues of the mature protein, and vasostatin II covers a longer N-terminal region of the same precursor.
Why is it called vasostatin?
The name reflects early observations that the fragment suppressed agonist-induced contraction in isolated blood vessel preparations. Later work also reported negative inotropic effects in cardiac tissue and antimicrobial activity, although no specific receptor has been firmly established.
How does vasostatin relate to chromogranin A assays?
Chromogranin A is measured broadly as a marker of neuroendocrine secretory activity, but circulating forms include both intact protein and fragments. Region-specific vasostatin peptides and antibodies let researchers distinguish processed products from the full-length precursor.
