What is UCP3?
Uncoupling protein 3 is an inner mitochondrial membrane carrier of the SLC25 family, related to UCP1 and UCP2. It is expressed most strongly in skeletal muscle, with additional presence reported in brown adipose tissue and heart.
What does UCP3 do?
Its physiological role is not settled. Proposed functions in the literature include mild proton leak, export of fatty acid anions or peroxides from the mitochondrial matrix, and protection against oxidative damage, with interpretations depending heavily on assay conditions.
