Tubulin & Microtubule Proteins — frequently asked

What is tubulin?
Tubulin is the protein subunit of microtubules. Alpha and beta tubulin form a heterodimer that polymerises into protofilaments, which associate laterally into hollow microtubule cylinders. Both subunits bind guanine nucleotide, and hydrolysis drives polymer turnover.
Why is tubulin researched?
Microtubule dynamics underlie spindle assembly, intracellular transport and cell architecture, so purified tubulin is used to reconstitute those processes in vitro, to test binding by associated proteins, and to screen compounds that stabilise or destabilise the polymer.
What forms are available?
Unlabeled purified tubulin is the standard assay substrate, supplied alongside fluorophore- and biotin-labeled preparations for imaging and surface attachment, plus microtubule-associated proteins used as binding partners in co-sedimentation and dynamics experiments.
