Thrombospondin — frequently asked

What is thrombospondin?
Thrombospondins are large multidomain matricellular glycoproteins that modulate cell-matrix interactions rather than providing structural support. Thrombospondin-1 is the best characterised member, released from platelet alpha granules and secreted by many other cell types.
Why are domain peptides supplied?
Thrombospondin-1 is modular, and different domains are reported to engage different receptors. Short peptides from a single region let researchers test whether an observed effect depends on the heparin-binding, type 1 repeat or C-terminal portion of the protein.
Which receptors are involved?
The literature most often cites CD36, associated with anti-angiogenic effects of the type 1 repeats, and CD47, engaged by C-terminal sequences. Integrins and heparan sulfate proteoglycans are also described as binding partners in various systems.
