Tachykinin — frequently asked

What defines a tachykinin?
Tachykinins share a conserved C-terminal sequence ending in Phe-X-Gly-Leu-Met with an amidated terminus. This motif is generally considered the key determinant of receptor recognition, while the more variable N-terminal region influences receptor subtype preference.
Which peptides belong to this family?
In mammals the main members are substance P, neurokinin A and neurokinin B, along with extended forms such as neuropeptide K and neuropeptide gamma. Many invertebrate tachykinin-related peptides, including the locustatachykinins, are also studied.
Why are prepro-tachykinin fragments supplied?
Fragments of the precursor allow investigators to follow how the protein is processed and to raise or validate antibodies that recognise specific regions. They are also used as controls when an assay must distinguish precursor from mature peptide.
