Synuclein — frequently asked

What are synucleins?
Synucleins are small natively unfolded neuronal proteins comprising alpha, beta and gamma forms. They contain repeated amphipathic motifs, a central hydrophobic region and an acidic tail, and they associate with membranes and synaptic vesicles in presynaptic terminals.
Why are phosphorylated fragments offered?
Phosphorylation at serine 129 of alpha-synuclein is extensively used as a marker of aggregated protein. Synthetic phosphopeptides spanning that site serve as immunogens, as positive controls and as blocking peptides for validating phospho-specific antibodies.
Can these fragments be used to make fibrils?
Generally not. The listed products are short defined fragments intended for antibody work, epitope mapping and assay standardisation. Fibril formation experiments normally require full-length recombinant protein rather than isolated fifteen- or twenty-residue segments.
