Suppressyn (HERV-Fb1) — frequently asked

What is suppressyn?
Suppressyn is a human protein encoded by an endogenous retroviral element of the HERV-Fb1 group. It corresponds to a truncated envelope-derived sequence and is reported to be expressed most strongly in placental tissue.
Why is suppressyn studied?
Interest centres on its reported binding to the ASCT2 transporter, the receptor used by syncytin-1, and the proposal that this limits trophoblast cell-cell fusion. Its possible interference with retroviral entry has also been examined.
What are the numbered peptides used for?
Peptides covering defined residue ranges of the human sequence serve mainly as immunogens, blocking peptides and epitope-mapping reagents. Together with matched antibodies they support detection work in placental tissue and cultured trophoblast models.
