What is somatostatin?
Somatostatin is a cyclic peptide that acts as a broad inhibitor of hormone secretion. Two forms are processed from a common precursor, somatostatin-14 and somatostatin-28, both stabilised by an internal disulfide bond that maintains the active ring.
Why are somatostatin analogs used?
The native peptide is reported to be degraded quickly and to bind all five receptor subtypes with broadly similar affinity. Constrained analogs are therefore used to achieve greater stability and to separate the contributions of individual receptor subtypes.
Which species variants are available?
The mature somatostatin-14 sequence is conserved across human, rat, mouse and porcine, so one peptide typically covers these species. Precursor-derived fragments differ more between species and are usually listed with the source organism stated.
