Secreted Frizzled-Related Proteins (SFRP) — frequently asked

What are secreted frizzled-related proteins?
SFRPs are secreted glycoproteins containing a cysteine-rich domain similar to the Wnt-binding region of Frizzled receptors, plus a netrin-like domain. Lacking a membrane anchor, they are described as extracellular modulators of Wnt signalling rather than as receptors.
Do SFRPs always inhibit Wnt signalling?
Not necessarily. Published reports describe both inhibitory and potentiating effects depending on concentration, cell type and which Wnt ligands and Frizzled receptors are present, so the direction of any effect should be established experimentally in each system.
What are the SFRP2 (25-50) peptides used for?
This fragment corresponds to a defined region of the human sequence chosen mainly for antigenicity. It is used as an immunogen, as an affinity ligand for purifying antisera, and as a blocking peptide in preadsorption controls for staining experiments.
