Serpinin — frequently asked

What is serpinin?
Serpinin is a short peptide processed from the C-terminal region of chromogranin A within dense-core secretory granules. Related forms include the extended serpinin-RRG and a pyroglutamylated version produced by cyclisation of the N-terminal residue.
Why is serpinin studied?
Published work has examined its reported role in secretory granule biogenesis, in particular an effect on protease nexin-1 expression through cyclic AMP signalling. The pyroglutamylated form has also been studied in cardiac tissue preparations.
How does serpinin relate to other chromogranin A peptides?
It is one of several named fragments of the same precursor, alongside pancreastatin, catestatin, vasostatins and WE-14. Each is reported to have distinct activities, so experiments normally specify the exact fragment and its residue numbering.
