Secretoneurin — frequently asked

What is secretoneurin?
Secretoneurin is a peptide of roughly thirty residues released by prohormone convertase cleavage of secretogranin II. Like other granin-derived peptides it is stored in dense-core secretory granules of neurons and neuroendocrine cells and released on stimulation.
What is secretoneurin used to study?
Reported applications include leukocyte migration and endothelial cell assays, studies of dopamine release in brain preparations, and measurement of the peptide as an index of dense-core granule secretion in neuroendocrine research models.
Why is the rat sequence supplied?
Most published secretoneurin work has used rat material, and the rat peptide is the form for which matched antibodies, tracers and assay kits were developed. Sequence differences between species mean assays should be validated before use in other models.
