Retinol-Binding Protein 4 (RBP4) — frequently asked

What is RBP4?
Retinol-binding protein 4 is a small secreted lipocalin that serves as the main circulating carrier of retinol. It is produced largely by the liver, binds its ligand inside a beta-barrel pocket, and associates with transthyretin in plasma.
Why is RBP4 studied beyond vitamin A transport?
RBP4 is also secreted by adipose tissue, and many published studies examine associations between its circulating concentration and metabolic parameters. These reports are largely correlative, and interpretations differ between cohorts, species and analytical methods used.
What affects RBP4 measurement?
RBP4 circulates both free and bound to transthyretin, and C-terminal proteolysis produces truncated forms. Antibody epitope selection, sample matrix and whether an assay requires extraction all influence the values obtained, so method details should accompany reported results.
