What is protein tau?
Tau is an intrinsically disordered microtubule-associated protein encoded by MAPT. It is described as binding and stabilising axonal microtubules, and six isoforms are produced in adult human brain through alternative splicing of the transcript.
What is PHF6?
PHF6 is a hexapeptide motif, VQIVYK, within the microtubule-binding repeat region that is reported to be central to tau assembly into ordered filaments. Capped versions are widely used as minimal, tractable models of the aggregation process.
