Prosaptide (Prosaposin-Derived) — frequently asked

What is a prosaptide?
A prosaptide is a short synthetic peptide based on a region of prosaposin, the precursor of the lysosomal saposins. TX14(A) is the best known example and derives from the saposin C domain of the precursor.
Why are prosaptides studied?
Prosaposin is reported to have neurotrophic and myelinotrophic activity in addition to its lysosomal role. Prosaptides were developed to test whether a short sequence reproduces those effects in neuronal and glial culture and injury models.
Which receptor do prosaptides act on?
The orphan receptors GPR37 and GPR37L1 have been proposed as targets for prosaposin-derived peptides, but the assignment remains debated in the literature. Investigators should treat receptor identity as an open question in experimental design.
