Proctolin — frequently asked

What is proctolin?
Proctolin is the pentapeptide Arg-Tyr-Leu-Pro-Thr, first isolated from cockroach hindgut and generally described as the first insect neuropeptide to be sequenced. It is unmodified, with no disulfide bonds or terminal amide, making it easy to synthesise and label.
What does proctolin do?
Published studies describe it as a myotropic neuromodulator in arthropods, acting on visceral and skeletal muscle to increase tonic contraction and modulate neurally evoked responses. Activity is generally attributed to a G protein-coupled proctolin receptor.
Is proctolin relevant to mammalian research?
It is an invertebrate peptide with no established mammalian counterpart, so it is used mainly in comparative physiology, arthropod neuroscience and insect muscle preparations rather than as a model for vertebrate neuropeptide signalling.
