Prion Protein (PrP) — frequently asked

What is the prion protein?
It is a GPI-anchored cell surface protein expressed strongly in neurons, with a flexible amino-terminal region containing octapeptide repeats and a structured helical carboxy-terminal domain. Its normal physiological function is still actively debated.
Why is PrP (106-126) so widely used?
This synthetic fragment aggregates readily in vitro and has been reported to be cytotoxic in neuronal cultures. Those properties made it a long-standing model peptide for studying conformational conversion and aggregation without handling infectious material.
Are these peptides infectious?
No. They are chemically synthesised fragments of the normal protein sequence, supplied as ordinary research chemicals. They are used for structural, aggregation and antibody work and are not prepared from or derived from infectious material.
