What is preptin?
Preptin is a 34-residue peptide derived from the E-peptide region of the pro-IGF-II precursor. It was isolated from pancreatic beta-cell secretory granules and is reported to be co-secreted with insulin and amylin in experimental preparations.
Why is preptin studied?
Published work describes amplification of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in islet preparations and anabolic effects on cultured osteoblasts. These reports have made preptin a subject in both metabolic and bone research, though its receptor remains unidentified.
What is preptin (16-34) used for?
It is the C-terminal portion of the full peptide, used to test which region carries the reported activity. Comparing full-length preptin with this fragment in the same assay is a standard structure-activity approach for an incompletely characterised peptide.
