What is POMC?
Proopiomelanocortin is a precursor protein processed by prohormone convertases into several peptides, including ACTH, the melanocyte-stimulating hormones, beta-lipotropin and beta-endorphin. The peptides produced depend on the enzymes present in a given tissue.
Why are N-terminal POMC fragments studied?
N-terminal fragments such as N-POMC1-28 are examined separately because several reports describe adrenal mitogenic activity for these sequences. They are also useful antigens for antibodies that distinguish precursor from downstream processed products.
What is the hinge peptide?
