Pleiotrophin (PTN / HARP) — frequently asked

What is pleiotrophin?
Pleiotrophin, also known as PTN or HARP, is a small secreted heparin-binding protein that forms a two-member growth factor family with midkine. Its structure comprises two disulfide-stabilised beta-sheet domains flanked by lysine-rich, glycosaminoglycan-binding tails.
Which receptors does pleiotrophin use?
Published work describes binding to the receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase PTPRZ1, to anaplastic lymphoma kinase, to syndecan-3 and to integrins. Signalling is often explained through inhibition of phosphatase activity and consequent changes in tyrosine phosphorylation.
Why are overlapping fragments listed?
Fragments spanning different regions of the precursor and mature protein let researchers target specific epitopes, raise region-selective antibodies and test which segments carry reported binding activity. Precursor and mature numbering are both given to avoid ambiguity.
