What is the difference between PHI and PHM?
They are species variants of the same precursor-derived peptide. Rat and porcine forms end in isoleucine and are called PHI-27, while the human form ends in methionine and is designated PHM-27. Both are 27 residues long and amidated.
How does PHI relate to VIP?
Both peptides are encoded within the prepro-VIP precursor and are processed from it, so they are frequently co-expressed and co-released. They also share receptor targets, acting at VPAC1 and VPAC2, usually with lower reported potency than VIP.
What are these peptides used for in the laboratory?
They are used in receptor binding and secretion assays, in immunohistochemical mapping of enteric and hypothalamic neurons, and as standards for immunoassays. Species-matched antibodies matter because the C-terminal residue differs between human and rodent forms.
