Peptide T — frequently asked

What is peptide T?
Peptide T is a short synthetic peptide based on a region of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120. It is named for the threonine residues in its sequence and has been studied since the 1980s as a research tool.
Why are D-alanine analogues supplied?
Replacing the N-terminal residue with D-alanine slows cleavage by aminopeptidases, extending the peptide's useful lifetime in cell culture and biological fluids. Amidating the C-terminus similarly reduces carboxypeptidase attack in longer experiments.
How well defined is its mechanism?
Reported activities include effects in chemotaxis assays and interactions related to CD4 and CCR5, but findings have varied between laboratories. The peptide is generally treated as a pharmacological probe rather than a characterised receptor ligand.
