What is PEDF?
PEDF is a secreted glycoprotein of the serpin family, encoded by SERPINF1, that does not inhibit proteases. It was first purified from retinal pigment epithelial cell medium and is studied for reported neurotrophic and anti-angiogenic properties.
Why are short PEDF peptides used instead of the protein?
Different surface regions of the folded protein are reported to carry different activities. Short peptides let researchers separate those functions experimentally, and they are far easier to synthesise, modify and compare than the full glycoprotein.
Which receptor does PEDF act on?
Several candidates have been proposed, including adipose triglyceride lipase, the laminin receptor and LRP6, and no single receptor is generally accepted. Mechanistic interpretation therefore depends heavily on the cell system and assay being used.
