Oxytocin — frequently asked

What is oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a cyclic nine-amino-acid peptide with a disulfide-bridged ring and an amidated tail. It is produced in hypothalamic magnocellular neurons and released from the posterior pituitary, and it acts through the G protein-coupled oxytocin receptor.
Why is oxytocin researched?
Classical work concerns uterine contraction and milk ejection, while a large behavioural literature examines proposed roles in social recognition, bonding and stress-related behaviour. Cell-based studies focus on receptor coupling, desensitisation and ligand selectivity.
How does oxytocin relate to vasopressin?
The two nonapeptides differ at only two positions and can bind each other's receptors at higher concentrations. Researchers therefore commonly run vasopressin comparators and selective antagonists to confirm which receptor mediates a measured response.
