Neurosecretory Protein GL (NPGL) — frequently asked

What is NPGL?
NPGL, or neurosecretory protein GL, is a small amidated hypothalamic neuropeptide encoded by the FAM237A gene. It was first identified in birds through analysis of predicted secretory precursors and is named after the residues preceding its amidation site.
Why is NPGL studied?
Reports describe increased food intake and fat accumulation after chronic central infusion in rodents and birds, with associated changes in lipogenesis and insulin sensitivity. This has placed it within energy balance and hypothalamic neuroendocrinology research.
Why are different fragment lengths offered?
The processed form that predominates in tissue is not fully settled, so both longer and shorter amidated precursor regions are supplied. Comparing them in the same assay helps determine which sequence reproduces reported activity in a given model.
