Nocistatin — frequently asked

What is nocistatin?
Nocistatin is a peptide encoded within prepronociceptin, the precursor that also yields nociceptin. It is released during processing of the same precursor and is studied largely for reported effects that oppose those attributed to nociceptin in experimental models.
Does nocistatin bind the nociceptin receptor?
Published reports generally indicate that it does not bind the NOP receptor, and no specific receptor for nocistatin has been firmly established. Its reported activity is usually described in functional terms rather than as direct competition at a defined binding site.
What are the I-125 labeled versions for?
Iodinated preparations, typically made from tyrosine-extended analogues, serve as radioligands in binding studies and as tracers in radioimmunoassay. They require appropriate radiation licensing, shielding, containment and disposal arrangements under institutional and local regulations.
