What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is a 16-residue peptide encoded by a short open reading frame inside the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene. It is classed as a mitochondrial-derived peptide alongside humanin and the SHLP peptides, and is translated from mitochondrial rather than nuclear DNA.
Why is MOTS-c studied?
Reports describe effects on cellular energy signalling, including AMP-activated protein kinase activation and changes in folate and methionine cycle intermediates, plus associations with exercise and skeletal muscle physiology in rodent and cell models.
