Motilin — frequently asked
What is motilin?
Motilin is a 22-residue peptide released from endocrine cells of the upper small intestine. It was first isolated from porcine duodenum and is studied mainly in relation to patterned contractile activity of the fasted stomach and small bowel.
Why are rodents rarely used in motilin research?
Reports indicate that mice and rats lack a functional motilin receptor gene, so the peptide has no comparable target in those species. Canine, human, porcine and rabbit preparations are therefore the usual choices for motilin receptor and motility experiments.
What are the prepro-motilin fragments for?
They correspond to defined regions of the precursor outside the mature peptide. Researchers use them as antigens for region-selective antibodies and as reference standards when investigating how the precursor is processed and which fragments accumulate in tissue extracts.
