What is melanin-concentrating hormone?
MCH is a cyclic neuropeptide closed by a disulfide bridge, originally described in fish as a pigment-aggregating factor. In mammals it is produced mainly in the lateral hypothalamus and is reported to signal through the G protein-coupled receptors MCHR1 and MCHR2.
Why is MCH studied?
Rodent and cell-based studies associate MCH signalling with feeding behaviour, energy balance, sleep-wake states and reward processing. The peptide and its analogues are therefore used as reference tools when characterising MCH receptor responses and hypothalamic circuits under laboratory conditions.
Which species variants are listed?
The mature MCH sequence is identical in human, rat and mouse, so many products are labeled for all three. Fish sequences differ, and precursor-derived peptides such as NEI-MCH forms are species-specific, so the stated origin on each product page should be checked.
