Lipocalin-2 (NGAL) — frequently asked

What is lipocalin-2?
Lipocalin-2, also called NGAL, is a small secreted protein with the eight-stranded beta-barrel fold typical of lipocalins. It is released from neutrophil granules and epithelial tissue and is reported to bind bacterial siderophores, sequestering iron during infection.
Why is lipocalin-2 widely measured?
It is frequently used as a marker in experimental models of tissue injury, particularly renal studies, because concentrations rise readily in biological fluids. Reported associations with inflammatory and metabolic parameters are largely correlative and vary between models and assay formats.
What are the numbered fragments used for?
Peptides such as lipocalin-2 (51-91) or (146-198) reproduce defined regions of the sequence. They serve mainly as immunogens, affinity purification ligands and blocking peptides, allowing researchers to raise and validate region-specific antibodies against the intact protein.
