Liver-Expressed Antimicrobial Peptides (LEAP) — frequently asked

What does LEAP stand for?
LEAP is short for liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide. The name covers small disulfide-stabilised peptides identified in human blood ultrafiltrate with pronounced expression in liver tissue, of which LEAP-1, better known as hepcidin, and LEAP-2 are the recognised members.
How do LEAP-1 and LEAP-2 differ?
LEAP-1, or hepcidin, is chiefly studied as a regulator of iron handling through the exporter ferroportin. LEAP-2 is more often examined as a reported antagonist at the ghrelin receptor, placing it in appetite and energy metabolism research rather than iron biology.
Which species variants are available?
Human sequences are most common, with rodent forms also catalogued for use in animal models. Sequence and disulfide connectivity vary between species and between synthetic preparations, so both should be verified on the product page before quantitative or functional work.
