What is humanin?
Humanin is a short peptide encoded in the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA region and is regarded as the prototype mitochondria-derived peptide. Research catalogs list both mitochondria-encoded and nuclear-encoded forms, which differ modestly in sequence and length.
Why is humanin researched?
Published cell and animal studies report cytoprotective effects under stress conditions and describe interactions with FPR2 and a CNTFR/WSX-1/gp130 receptor complex. Humanin is therefore studied in ageing, mitochondrial biology, apoptosis signalling and neurodegeneration model research.
What is the difference between the encoded forms?
The mitochondria-encoded peptide derives from the mitochondrial open reading frame, while the nuclear-encoded form comes from nuclear sequences resembling it. Both human and rat versions are catalogued so investigators can compare sequence variants within the same experimental system.
