Growth-Blocking Peptide (GBP) — frequently asked

What is growth-blocking peptide?
GBP is an insect cytokine originally isolated from parasitised armyworm larvae and named for its reported effect of delaying larval development. It is the founding member of the ENF peptide family, defined by a conserved N-terminal Glu-Asn-Phe motif and a disulfide-stabilised core.
What is it used for in research?
It is applied in insect cell culture and haemocyte work, notably plasmatocyte spreading and adhesion assays, and in studies of insect cellular immunity and cytokine-like signalling. Labeled variants additionally support binding, tracer and fluorescence imaging experiments.
Which species does it come from?
The catalogued sequence derives from the lepidopteran armyworm. Related ENF family peptides have been described in other insects with differing sequences and potencies, so results obtained with this peptide should not be assumed to transfer directly to other species.
