Glicentin & Glicentin-Related Polypeptide (GRPP) — frequently asked

What is glicentin-related polypeptide?
GRPP is a peptide corresponding to the extreme N-terminal region of proglucagon, released when glicentin is processed further. It is studied mainly as a marker of how the proglucagon precursor is handled in a given tissue.
Why does proglucagon produce different peptides in different tissues?
The precursor is cleaved by prohormone convertases whose expression differs between intestinal L cells and pancreatic alpha cells. That difference is reported to yield glicentin, oxyntomodulin and GLP peptides in gut, and glucagon in pancreatic islets.
What are labeled GRPP peptides used for?
Biotin-, FAM- and FITC-labeled versions serve as tracers and detection reagents in binding studies and immunoassay development. They are particularly useful when building assays that must distinguish one proglucagon fragment from closely related sequences.
