What is gastrin?
Gastrin is a peptide hormone secreted mainly by antral G cells of the stomach. It exists in multiple molecular forms of differing length, all sharing an amidated carboxy-terminal tetrapeptide that is required for activity at the gastrin receptor.
How does GRP relate to gastrin?
Gastrin-releasing peptide is the mammalian counterpart of amphibian bombesin. It is reported to promote gastrin release, which is how it acquired its name, but it signals through its own receptor and is also studied as a neuropeptide in its own right.
What is the difference between little and big gastrin?
Little gastrin, or gastrin I, is the seventeen-residue form, while big gastrin is a longer amino-terminally extended version. Both carry the same active C-terminus, so assays are often designed to distinguish them by their extended N-terminal regions.
