What does FIZZ stand for?
FIZZ abbreviates "found in inflammatory zone", the phrase used when FIZZ-1 was first described in a rodent airway inflammation model. The same protein is also called RELM-alpha, reflecting its structural relationship to resistin in the same gene family.
Why are FIZZ peptides studied?
RELM-alpha is strongly induced during type 2 immune responses in mice and is widely used as a marker of alternatively activated macrophages. Published work also examines its reported effects on fibroblasts, vascular remodelling and adipose tissue inflammation.
Do these findings apply to human tissue?
Not directly. Orthologue relationships across the resistin-like family differ between mice and humans, and RELM-alpha has no straightforward human counterpart. Results from murine models should therefore be interpreted within that species context rather than extrapolated.
