Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF-23) — frequently asked

What is FGF-23?
FGF-23 is an endocrine fibroblast growth factor produced mainly by bone cells. Because it binds heparan sulfate weakly it circulates as a hormone, and it is reported to require the co-receptor alpha-Klotho to activate FGF receptors in target tissue such as kidney.
Why is FGF-23 researched?
It is widely described as a central regulator of phosphate handling, reported to reduce renal phosphate reabsorption and suppress active vitamin D production. That places it at the centre of mineral metabolism, bone and kidney research in cell and animal models.
What is the C-terminal fragment used for?
The human FGF-23 (180-251) fragment, or cFGF23, corresponds to a proteolytic product of the intact hormone. It has been reported to compete with intact FGF-23 for the Klotho-receptor complex, making it useful in binding, competition and immunoassay development work.
