Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 (FGF-19) — frequently asked

What is FGF-19?
FGF-19 is an endocrine fibroblast growth factor expressed mainly in the ileum. Its low heparan sulfate affinity lets it circulate and act on distant tissue, and it signals through FGFR4 together with the co-receptor beta-Klotho.
How does FGF-19 relate to bile acids?
Published work describes ileal FGF-19 expression as induced by bile acid activation of the farnesoid X receptor, with the secreted protein reported to feed back on the liver and repress CYP7A1 and bile acid synthesis.
What is the difference between FGF-19 and FGF-15?
FGF-15 is the rodent ortholog of human FGF-19. The two share the same position in bile acid signalling but differ in sequence, so species should be checked carefully when selecting peptides, antibodies or comparing published results.
