Feeding Circuit Activating Peptides (FCAP) — frequently asked

What are FCAPs?
Feeding circuit activating peptides are neuropeptides described in the sea hare Aplysia. They were characterised during studies of the buccal ganglion circuitry that produces feeding motor programs, and are supplied as the related FCAPb and FCAPg forms.
Are FCAPs found in mammals?
No established mammalian counterpart has been reported. These peptides are studied within invertebrate neuroscience, where Aplysia preparations allow recording from identified neurons, so results should not be extrapolated to vertebrate systems without direct evidence.
Why are labelled versions supplied?
Biotin, FAM and rhodamine conjugates allow the peptides to be tracked in ganglion preparations by fluorescence imaging or streptavidin-based detection. They are used for binding site localisation, uptake studies and pull-down experiments rather than for functional stimulation.
